Chase online banking down for 14 hours now
I’ve been updating the original post on this story regularly. Here is an update for those of you following on RSS and Twitter.
Chase’s online banking has been down since around 4 pm PT/7pm ET yesterday, 14 hours so far. Originally, they put up a message that they were down for scheduled maintenance but around 12:30 am PT/3:30 ET probably realized that was fairly unbelievable and changed the message on their main page to reflect the more unplanned nature of the outage. We have not received reports yet on whether this is affecting their other banking operations.
Stay tuned.

This is making me nervous!

me too.
14 hours of unplanned outage from one of the largest banks in the world should be almost inexcusable. What ever went wrong was nothing minor, that’s for sure.

Still nothing from JPMorgan Chase Corporate Media. I forwarded my e-mail (see comments attached to article below) along to Fox Business News, CNNMoney, NY Times, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, and copied Mr. Evangelisti, again for good measure.
The silence is deafening.

Chill, dudes, it’s only money. At least most of you have your health. Have a nice cup of cocoa and a backrub. There ya go! Feeling better already? You Americans get wigged out the instant a light bulb goes off or someone reaches to itch their scalp for a fraction of a second. Think of the hardships of your pioneers and frontiersmen in centuries past. You’ll probably survive a computer glitch. If you were dead already, you wouldn’t even notice this. And if you or some family member had some fatal disease, this wouldn’t really mean much in the grand scheme of things. You probably won’t even remember it five years from now, unless you have a really boring life. Chill. Enjoy the cocoa.

Their website now says “Our website is temporarily unavailable. We’re working quickly to restore access.” I think they mean that they are working to restore access as soon as possible. How quickly they are physically working can’t be determined, so I think it’s just a problem in the way they parsed the sentence. I suspect if a person’s hair is on fire and the whole scene at that location looks like a Hieronymus Bosch painting, the perfect use of English in their status alert is probably not the issue foremost on their minds. But I could be wrong. I wish I lived near whatever part of the planet their computer center is located, because although I might not be able to fix things for them personally, despite being quite proficient with adjusting dials and switches randomly, I might be able to offer beverages or moral support in person. Probably when the system comes back online, their English will also improve. They might even include one of those yellow smileys. That would be nice. My best wishes.

I think the issue with the language on their website is not that their English and grammar is imperfect, but the fact that they originally tried to pass this off as a scheduled maintenance, to avoid any bad publicity. 🙂

If you spend some time on our site and read the many ways in which Chase has been technically deficient in their handling of small details, you will realize that they screw up lots of ways that affect people’s money. Given that, a large outage like this makes people very nervous. Most people, especially now, don’t have a lot of extra money to throw around.

Must say that although this outage is not good, anyone whose old Washington Mutual account was absorbed by Chase realized a quantum leap in improved customer service of many kinds. If Chase sucks, at least they only suck a tiny fraction as much as Washington Mutual did. What an unmitigated horror THEY were!

I wish it were true Bob. I think like with WaMu, your mileage may vary based on the competency of your local branch staff, but overall, Chase has some serious customer service issues. With WaMu we were pretty certain that problems were due to the fact that people were often clueless, but with Chase, there seems to be a combination of cluelessness and ill intent, based on all the stories I have seen.

@ Bob Wamu was a 1000 times better than chase in so many ways it is sickening.

I tried to log in last night around 8:00pm (about 12hrs ago) and had some weird issues.
First I noticed that the normal tab icon wasn’t displaying. Instead of the little Chase logo, I was seeing the peace sign that normally shows up for Craigslist. Next I tried to sign in using my normal credentials and after hitting enter, it took me to another page asking me to log in again. This time the tab showed the Citi financial logo on the tab. This spooked me because the first thing that came to mind was someone hacking the Chase site. I tried once more about 5min later and that’s when it said the site was down due to scheduled maintenance, but I’ve never seen them schedule maintenance that early on a Monday evening. Usually they try to wait until the wee hours on the weekend.
