Yesterday, I had all access to my WAMU account shut down for approximately 12 hours. Why? Because there was an extravagant purchase made with my debit card and they were concerned that the card may have been stolen. The purchase that caused the red flag to go up: $4.11 for coffee at 711!!
I had to call the customer service department 3 times to get my account un-frozen. One of their reps actually hung up on me at one point because I wanted to speak to a supervisor. They couldn't give me any kind of valid reason why this was done and didn't offer an apology.
Thanks to my account being closed all day, I now have to restart 2 of my direct withdrawals with other companies and I had to try to explain to them that "No, I'm not a bum. I really do have money in my account to cover my bills, but WAMU wouldn't let me use it because....I bought coffee today?!"
On a totally separate note, WAMU has actually charged me a NSF fee because (these are their words) "their system predicted that my account was likely going into the negative". Maybe they should have used some of those ESP abilities to predict that they were going to go bankrupt...just a thought.
